A Prayer After Divorce
Share
Lord, this is not the ending I wrote for. There are papers on a counter I never expected to sign. Sit with me tonight. You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18); mine is broken in a way I did not know it could break. Ruth started over as a widow in a foreign field (Ruth 1:16; 2:2). You wrote her into the family line of the Messiah. You are not finished with me either. Behold, I am doing a new thing — do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:19) Help me perceive it. Give me beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3). Where I have failed, forgive. Where I was failed, heal. Bless my children if I have them, and let neither parent become a villain in their memory. Your mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23) — send me one tomorrow. Amen.
