A Prayer for a Prodigal Child

A Prayer for a Prodigal Child

Father who scanned the road every evening
until the prodigal came home (Luke 15:20) —
I stand at that same window now,
praying for one who has walked into a far country.
You leave the ninety-nine to find the one (Luke 15:4).
Go after them where I cannot follow.
Make the husks bitter and the memory of home sweet (Luke 15:16–17).
Surround them with a love they cannot outrun.
You have promised that your children shall be taught by the Lord (Isaiah 54:13);
I hold you to your word.
And keep my own heart soft —
ready to run down the road the moment I see them coming.
Amen.
