A Prayer for Elderly Parents

Lord, honor your father and mother (Exodus 20:12) — your commandment does not expire when they grow old. It gets heavier. You have promised, Even to gray hairs I will carry you (Isaiah 46:4) — carry them, and carry us who watch them slow. Do not cast them off in the time of old age (Psalm 71:9). Guard their minds where the fog is thickening. Send helpers when we cannot be there ourselves. Give me the loyalty of Ruth clinging to Naomi (Ruth 1:16) and the practical love of Joseph feeding Jacob in Egypt (Genesis 47:12). From the cross, you gave your mother into safe hands (John 19:26–27) — give me hands like those. Let me honor them well, while there is still time. Amen.
