A Prayer for Unity Across Political Divisions

Lord, in the twelve you called, you seated a tax collector and a Zealot at the same table (Matthew 9:9; Mark 3:18) — a Roman collaborator and a Roman resister, sharing bread. Do that again. The dividing wall you broke down at the cross (Ephesians 2:14) we have been rebuilding on Facebook. Forgive us. Where I have made an idol of my side, smash it (1 John 5:21). Where I have loved a party more than I have loved my brother, call it what it is. Welcome the one whose politics I cannot understand the way you welcomed the one whose politics I would have chosen (Romans 14:1). Remind us we are neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, neither red nor blue, for we are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28). Make us one — not by both sides going quiet, but by both sides going lower. Amen.
