A Prayer for Creation

Lord, in the beginning you spoke light, and there was light (Genesis 1:3). You saw all that you had made, and it was very good (Genesis 1:31). Forgive us for treating it as anything less. You put Adam in the garden to work it and to keep it (Genesis 2:15) — not to strip it, not to drain it. The earth is yours, and the fullness thereof (Psalm 24:1). We have often forgotten whose it is. Creation groans, waiting (Romans 8:22) — we hear it in the wildfires and the flooded coasts. Have mercy on the earth you called good. Teach us to be the kind of gardener you first hired (Genesis 2:15). Give clean water to every child of yours who does not have it today (Matthew 25:35). And when you make all things new (Revelation 21:5), let us not be found among those who destroyed the earth (Revelation 11:18). Amen.
