A Prayer for Hope When Hope Is Thin

God of hope (Romans 15:13) — mine has thinned to a thread. Do not let it break. You said even a tree cut down has hope, that at the scent of water its stump will bud again (Job 14:7–9). Bring water near my roots. I recall to mind, and therefore I have hope: your steadfast love never ceases, your mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning (Lamentations 3:21–23). Hope is an anchor for the soul, firm and secure (Hebrews 6:19) — drop it into deeper water than this storm. Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope, and this hope does not put us to shame (Romans 5:3–5). Keep me on the road until the sun comes up. Amen.
