Teach Me to Pray: A Prayer for Learning to Pray from the Heart
Share
Heavenly Father,
Before words ever form on my lips, You already know my heart. Still, I come—not to impress, but to connect. I come not with polished phrases but with longing for Your presence. Teach me how to pray—not just with words, but with trust. Not just with requests, but with relationship.
When I don’t know what to say, let silence be my offering. When I stumble, let honesty be my strength. Remind me that prayer is not performance—it is presence. It is leaning into You like a child. It is crying out, whispering thanks, confessing fears, and praising with trembling joy.
Lord, teach me to pray like Jesus—
With surrender, saying “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
With intimacy, calling You “Abba, Father.”
With boldness, believing that what I ask in faith, I will receive.
With persistence, like the widow who would not give up.
With humility, like the tax collector who said, “Have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Teach me to listen as much as I speak.
To wait without rushing.
To trust You even when answers delay.
And when I can’t pray at all, let the Holy Spirit pray in groans too deep for words.
Shape my prayer life until it becomes the breath of my soul, the rhythm of my days, and the anchor of my nights. Let prayer not be my last resort, but my first love.
Amen.
